Man, I Feel Like A Woman

It is International Woman’s Day (& month) I felt it was the perfect time to post a blog about the amazing things I love about being a woman. I thank God every single day that me made me a woman. (no offense to all the males out there)

That being said, it’s taken a whole lifetime to truly appreciate and embrace my femininity. What I mean by that, is not the process of actually becoming a woman. (trust me, we don’t want to go there), but embracing the strength and resilience that comes naturally with being a woman. I mean, we can produce little humans!! I think that alone gives us proof that we were made to endure and be strong, not just physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Through tough times, you could say I developed some tough skin, enough to turn cold and bitter. Thankfully, I have remained kind and empathetic, which I owe to my feminine side. I think it’s important to note that females have a smaller amygdala for a reason. The amygdala, if you didn’t know, is the almond shaped back part of your brain responsible for the emotion responses, particularly negative or fear responses. This is why generally males are more reactive (physically or acts of anger) than women. Of course, women have hormones, so we too, act in anger at times and have all the mood swings. (ok science rant over)

My point is, God made us so different for so many reasons. Some reasons that I still don’t know and will want to ask him someday. For now, here are my favorite things about being a woman:

  • My ability to empathize, even in the toughest seasons

  • The privilege to bear a child (not yet, but someday!)

  • A mother’s instinct to nurture and care for others

  • Being underestimated, simply because I am a woman

  • Reproductive organs (we will keep this PG, but you get the idea)

  • Higher percentage of body fat compared to a male (more to love baby!)

The thing I want to take a deeper look at is the part about being underestimated, simply because I am a woman. Most might think that this is unfair, but I beg to differ. Being underestimated is an absolute gift. In fact, it’s probably my favorite thing about being a woman. It’s like a challenge for me and a way to think of myself as an exception to the rule in a male dominant society. It’s not about proving anything to anyone, however, the satisfaction from taking the world for a surprise, is one damn priceless reward.

If you feel that you aren’t smart enough, pretty enough, funny enough etc. etc., I am politely asking you to stop. Take a look in the mirror and be SO proud of the woman you are and the woman you are becoming. Being a woman is such a blessing and, whether you think so or not, we are here to make this world a better place. Take this day to recognize and celebrate yourself and the women around you. You deserve it.

Love you all and take care.
