Intuition

I know I haven’t posted on here in awhile, and I could give you all the reasons in the book why I haven’t, but I felt called to write about the topic of intuition. This year, and specifically lately, I have benefitted personally from listening to my intuition/discernment and I wanted to talk about why it is so damn important to listen to your gut. But first, I want to quickly cover what the words intuition or discernment mean.

Everyone has their own experience and definition of both words, but I decided to use the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition. It states the following:

Intuition: the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.

Discernment: the ability to judge well.

These words are used interchangeably, but they mean almost the exact same thing. Seems simple enough, right? Why wouldn’t you listen to your gut?

Oh man, I could go on and on for days on all the reasons people choose NOT to listen to their gut, so I’ll get straight to my reasonings.

The number one reason I don’t listen to my gut is fear of failure and the second, is fear of abandonment. These deep fears stem all the way back to the early years of my life.

If you don’t know by now, your childhood experiences shape the person you are today. This can be a beautiful, yet unfortunate truth. I questioned everything I knew and did growing up for reasons I will not go into at this moment. Because of this, I learned to doubt my intuition. I ignored my inner knowing, which makes me so sad now, but it forced me to do the work on myself that I’ve desperately needed.

The good news is, the more I grew and the more I learned, the more I realized how accurate my intuition has been all these years.

This year I finally started to listen to her. I say her like she’s a person, because she is. She is smart, witty and has always been protective of me. I take the time to thank her everyday. There have been so many instances where my gut told me one thing and my brain told me another, and for once, I listened to my gut. The examples I have would be too time consuming to share, but I can assure you there will be another time, podcast episode or chapter…(😉)

Whether you knew it or not, your intuition has done the same exact thing for you. He or she has been a driving force in your life so I think. it’s time you listen to and thank him or her for that.

Here’s the BIG question.

What does intuition feel like? How do you know that you are actually intuitive and not acting on an impulse?

I cannot say that there is an exact feeling or indication of your intuition speaking to you, but I can say this. You will know, TRUST me. You will know. The more I trust in God, the universe, to guide me in this thing called life, the more intuitive I become. The hardest part was learning to trust myself, despite learning to ignore my intuition all these years.

Whatever you believe in, a great place to start is faith. Faith in something bigger than yourselves. The more you trust in the plan that has been created for you, the more intuitive you will become. It will be hard, but it will be worth it, I promise.

One thing that I started doing is journaling all the times that my intuition has served me right. This serves as a reminder that I should continue to trust who I am and what intuition is communicating to me. This is something you could do daily or weekly, that way you are aware of how your intuition is serving you.

I hope this was insightful for you as it was for me writing it.

Love you all and take care.
