Creating a Safe Space

When life is tough and the future is uncertain, our instinct is to try to control these things and circumstances that are sadly not in our control. We obsess over predicting the future that we stress ourselves out and ruin the present moment. It’s heartbreaking! Some wonder why their life has passed them by, without doing any of the things they dreamed of.

During these unprecedented times we are all experiencing anxiety, fear and grief over the life we once knew. The life that is now even heavier of a fast spreading pandemic, racial injustice, toxic media and so much more. For most, these circumstances become overwhelming and a sense of hopelessness sinks in, rendering mental illness such as depression, PTSD, and anxiety. It’s no wonder we are trying to control the future! We just want happier and brighter days and I completely relate.

However, with that being said, there are no guarantees to perfect and happy circumstances. (sorry to burst your bubble!) I’m just being real with you, because I care. This is why it is almost pointless worrying about the future and what lies ahead...it is just as toxic as the media! Let me just get to the point.

When things are out of control in our life, it’s important to take measures that can calm and ease our worrying minds. One way of doing this is focusing on things you CAN control. This can be whatever is controllable for you. The example I will use for this post is simply creating a safe space for yourself. When I say safe space, I mean a place where you feel secure, calm and at rest. A space you genuinely feel joyful and content in. This generally is a bedroom since that is where most of us sleep, but it can be any room, corner or space that is available to you.

When creating this safe space you want to keep in mind that this space is yours hence in YOUR control. This space represents your mind and soul. That being said, I highly recommend this space be clean or any mess or clutter. (wouldn’t want your mind to be cluttered, right?) Organize however you wish, but make sure the space is clean of distractions or anything that causes you worry such as any screens or radios etc.

Now that you defined and cleaned your space, now you can add things and smells that bring you ease and happiness. For example, my room is always filled with the scent of lavender from my oil diffuser. Lavender is my favorite smell as it instantly puts me in a calm and relaxed mood. My room is also filled with pictures of my sweet puppy Ellie. She is the brightest light in my life so when I see a picture of her it brings me so much joy. Candles are also a staple in my room decor. Your space is your oyster! (No pun intended) You get to do whatever you wish with it.

Having this safe space has been a life saver during my darkest times. When I am upset, angry, sad or anxious, I know I am able to rest and regain my thoughts and focus in my room. Yes, it doesn't heal pain or take stress away, but it IS something we can control, which will give us a sense of security in an unsecure world. I am so grateful to have a safe space of my own and the comfort this tool has truly given me.

Love you all and take care.
