26 Things I Learned in 26 Years

This past weekend it was my 26th birthday and I am not going to lie to you, it felt strange once again, as this was my second COVID-19 birthday celebration. I am used to making all kinds of plans my entire birthday month and socializing like the social butterfly I am.

Yet, this wasn’t the reason it felt strange. It was something much deeper.

When I say strange, I don’t mean it in any negative way at all. I love birthdays and I love celebrating. This was the first time in my life that this day didn’t mean very much to me. Of course, I am absolutely thankful my wonderful parents gave birth to me, but I was getting this feeling that this simply was just another day.

I slowly started to realize that I could not believe I am where I am at today. The mindset I have, the growth I’ve rendered, the habits I’ve built, all because of enduring the worst and most painful year of my life. I’ve already gone into some detail about this, but my point is, it dawned on me that there is so much to celebrate. Not just on my birthday, but EVERYDAY. Everyday is an accomplishment in itself and something that should not be taken for granted.

I was just so grateful to be alive, happy and healthy. I’ve never truly grasped the blessings I have received, which is why this past birthday felt so strange. It felt so strange to be content with what I have and where I am going, regardless of the circumstances.

That being said, I wanted to share with you the 26 things I learned in the 26 years I’ve been alive on this Earth.

  1. Never not do something simply because you’re afraid.

  2. Hurt people, hurt people.

  3. Choose joy, even if it hurts.

  4. Stick to your boundaries, no matter what the cost is.

  5. Applied knowledge is power.

  6. Burnout will never be cool, I don’t care how young and strong you are.

  7. Always put yourself in another person’s shoes. Empathy is the greatest superpower you can ever have.

  8. Human connection is the ultimate remedy for anxiety and depression.

  9. It’s OK to be on medication for your mental illness. In fact, I highly encourage it (of course, prescribed by a professional)

  10. Therapy has changed my life and made me so much stronger and more self-aware.

  11. Dogs are God’s greatest gift to the world.

  12. Always ask for help.

  13. Meditation is essential, but like all other things, it takes practice.

  14. Sleep is not for the weak. Stop being a martyr.

  15. It’s OK to have a different opinion. Our differences provide variety and excitement in every conversation and relationship.

  16. A smile can go a long way.

  17. Become the greatest listener is one of the greatest gifts you can give someone.

  18. Remain present always. It will be the only thing that can ground you from past/future fears.

  19. Spirituality, no matter what it is, is the foundation of your life and your purpose. Listen to it. Prioritize it.

  20. It’s OK to say no. It is also OK to say yes. Trust your body’s signals.

  21. Drive with the windows down to your favorite tunes at least twice a week. SO good for the soul.

  22. Mental illness is REAL, therefore it should be taken seriously at ALL times.

  23. Yoga…enough said.

  24. Forgive and love on those who have hurt you. They are, after all, human just like YOU.

  25. Just do it. No matter how crazy it is, just go for it. You only have one life. Don’t waste it.

  26. Start and end your day with a gratitude practice. Your life will change, I promise.

Next time it’s your birthday or even before then, I want you to think of all of the lessons you’ve learned thus far. Reflect on all the blessings you have and the people who care deeply about you. Yes, it’s just another day for most, but another day of life nonetheless.  Live it. Cherish it. Love it.

Love you all and take care.
